Pigeon Control

Pigeons are the unlikely source of human disease. Their droppings on the street can be dangerous to humans when wet or when stepped upon. Bird droppings on buildings corrode mortar and masonry, which could lead to financial costs in repair.

Pigeons also carry and transport bacteria, viruses and diseases that they can pass onto humans.  Pigeons carry over 40 diseases that can be passed onto humans, making it important to implement pigeon control. To prevent such damage from pigeons people have turned to pigeon control specialists to help reduce the amount of pigeons in their area. Some methods include flying a prey bird to warn off pigeons and spikes on roofs and windowpanes to prevent pigeons from perching there.  Pigeon control consists of ways of preventing pigeons from perching or habituating in the area rather than killing the birds as seen in other forms of pest control.

One option to prevent and control pigeons is to use netting systems.  These block off your property from pigeons and do not allow them access to dumpage on your rooftops.  They are useful because they also help prevent other birds from roosting and they are easy to install.  They are also lightweight so they remain strong with windy weather conditions.

It is a huge hassle removing pigeon manure from properties because of health and safety reasons.  Large build ups of pigeon faeces can be very expensive to remove especially in periods of building renovation.  It is much better to take a precaution and control these species rather than having to clear up the effects.  Employees that end up with the job of removing their mess also end up in a health hazard.

The history of the pigeon is however different to the current perception of them.  Pigeons have seen many generations alongside our ancestors and used to be messengers and even food sources.  However now their uses have turned into pigeon racing and pigeon shooting.  They are seen as an annoyance to property owners as they leave their remains on buildings.  Now seen as a pest, they have been slaughtered in mass numbers, however their intelligence has kept their species alive.

Poison has been used in the past to try and help pigeon control.  However poison has been outlawed in most European countries because it isn't healthy for the environment and those animals that prey upon pigeons.  This pigeon control method also has seen an increase in species in those countries which implement this.

Shooting is a widely used method of pigeon control.  However it is very unpopular to citizens and highly profitable to pest control companies.  Animals rights organisations are highly against this system and if not carried out appropriately it can be a terrifying experience to watch.

Cage trapping seems like a less traumatising experience for the general public to think of.  It involves trapping pigeons during feeding.  The companies however don't tell people but they always kill the birds after.
